Synopsis
“Do as I say, not as I do”: the Brazilian Dictatorship, like any typical authoritarian regime, said one thing, but did another. João Pedro Bim captures the genesis of Institutional Act Number Five with the tenacity of the finest archival researchers: first, look for materials, known or still unreleased, and listen to what they tell you; then, through montage, elucidate what they hadn’t realized they were saying. An essential film in a time dominated by “narratives”, which reminds us that coercive legislative evolutions are an old habit of the powerful elite in this country. (E.V.)
