Ma Li dreams. First with sheep. But soon with an imagined West. Ma Li envisions that her body belongs to the West, a white body, inside a train, the same train announcing the arrival of Modernity. A film layered with images, which somehow communicate feelings that this imagined West may be a melancholic imprisonment as archival images from two different films – Spring in a Small Town, by Fei Mu, and The Lady Vanishes, by Alfred Hitchcock – coalesce and deceive us as to what is dream and what is cinema.
