Synopsis
In a housing complex on an island near Montreal, a deadly lab-created parasite runs out of control, causing residents to unleash their primal instincts, engaging in sexual and violent acts. The director’s third feature film evoked mixed reactions at the time, from commercial success to condemnation from Canadian lawmakers. The tone is now firmly rooted in horror, in dialogue with genre conventions through gore. In this microcosm of conservative demeanor, the film materializes the dread evoked by the freedom of bodies and the contradictions of surrendering to one’s most basic impulses. (C.I.)
