Beyond an attempt to explain ancestry through the exploration and manipulation of archival images, “Solmatalua” seems to enchant images as if manipulating artifacts, likewise producing rhythm, ginga, and swing. An excessive desire for images is akin to staring at the sun: in the end we see too much and nothing at all. Sometimes it’s better to gaze as if someone who inspects subtle contours in the moonlight, knowing that seeing everything, all the time, is not always necessary. (B. G.)
