MINISTÉRIO DA CIDADANIA, GOVERNO DO PARANÁ E COPEL presents

Synopsis

Ruiz was commissioned to make a TV documentary about the 1978 election cycle in Paris’s 11th arrondissement from the explicit point of view of a Chilean exile. The period that he covered ended with a surprising Rightist victory and a humbling Leftist defeat. His film unfolds in retrospective fashion along two tracks. One is that of the vérité interviews with residents who speak about their hopes and dreams for the future. Another is that of the film’s self-aware and self-reflexive narrating voice, which continually analyses what is being represented onscreen, how, and why.

Raúl Ruiz Raúl Ernesto Ruiz Pino (1941-2011) was a Chilean writer, teacher, theater artist, film theorist, and filmmaker who believed with full sincerity that the cinema was a field of limitless possibilities. He sought to discover them over the course of more than 100 films, including works left lost or unfinished at the time of his death that audiences still might someday see.
