Official Selection: Other Views

The films in the Other Views section bring to light a variety of styles and perspectives about pressing issues. With eight feature films and eleven short films, the programming underscores diverse proposals and languages framed around a series of edges upon which to reflect on contemporaneity.

The selected Brazilian feature films include The Night’s Substance, by Bernard Lessa, which tells the story of a love encounter in the hostile city of Vitória, God Has AIDS, by Fábio Leal and Gustavo Vinagre, which presents seven artists and an activist doctor, all HIV positive, as well as new images and perspectives on the fight against serophobia in Brazil, and I Will Never Be the Same, by Alice Lanari, which explores the topic of violence against women in Latin American countries; the Colombian film The Calm After the Storm features Mercedes Gaviria, a young woman who returns to Colombia after a study period abroad and begins to write a diary as she strives to understand the place and role of women in the world in cinema, still deeply rooted in a patriarchal mindset; in Nothing but the Sun, Paraguayan filmmaker Arami Ullón follows Mateo Sobode Chiqueno and his recorded stories, songs, and testimonies of his Ayoreo people on an old tape recorder; Delphine’s Prayers, by Rosine Mbakam, portrays a young Cameroonian woman who, like so many other women of her generation, is crushed by endless domination patterns that imprison African women; Girls | Museum, by Shelly Silver, takes a journey through the historical art collection of the MdbK/Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig, Germany, guided by the experience and insights of a group of 7 to 19 year old girls. Finally, North By Current, features American filmmaker Angelo Madsen Minax as he documents his return to his hometown after the mysterious death of his two-year-old niece and the arrest of his brother-in-law as the culprit.
